Building the chicken coop...

I grew up on the East End of Long Island, when it was still considered pretty rural. My great-grandparents (on my Mother's side) came to the area from Eastern Europe and worked on farms. My Mother's parents were both born here on the North Fork (near present-day Hallockville). Her Father was a genuine Long Island Duck Farmer. On my Father's side, my Grandmother immigrated with her family as a young girl from Poland. They had a farm in Aquebogue. My Grandfather had been in World War I, after arriving in America from Poland too. He served as an interpretor to General Pershing. After my Grandparents wed, they stayed in Aquebogue and my Grandfather had a wicker furniture & basket making business. My 80 year old twin Aunts still live in the same house.
The North Fork is very important to me, and I hope to help in keeping it's heritage alive. It has been a live-long dream of mine to have my own farm. I grew up raising a variety of animals, and have worked in a number of animal-care related places - gaining knowledge and experience along the way. I found my beloved Easter the Sheep and Friday the Goat when I worked at the Long Island Game Farm. Easter had been born prematurely on Easter Sunday, and her mother had abandoned her. I was working that cold, damp day and I brought her home to take care of her. Well, with me she stayed. Friday had been born two days earlier, hence his name, and he too needed extra care. Both are pictured here. As for myself, I can only have sheep or goat's milk and I've been learning to make cheeses and other dairy products. This project is in it's early stages, and I'm hoping to be able to invite you over sometime real soon. Stay Tuned! In the meantime, here's a look back... Lisa
